How to Survive and Recover from the Holidays

Maybe you’ve heard of the term ‘rest and digest’, maybe you haven’t. Let me take some time to explain what this term means and how massage can help you survive the holidays.


During the holidays we are typically over-eating, worrying about end-of-year projects, spending more money than usual, and attending many holiday festivities which usually means less sleep. All of this fun means your body needs all the help it can get to regain balance!


So, where does massage come in?


Our body’s nervous system has two settings, sympathetic and parasympathetic. These are also known in layman's terms and ‘fight or flight’ (sympathetic) and ‘rest and digest’ (parasympathetic). One of the benefits of massage is to aide in switching your body from its standard setting, sympathetic, into the restorative state of parasympathetic*. During all of this holiday stress and craziness, allow your body some extra time to regain balance by booking a massage session (or a few!).


Don’t wait until you start to feel worn down, think of massage as a way to ward off excess stress. Ease yourself into ‘rest and digest’ a few times before 2017 and start the new year off in your best state of mind!


Once you’ve made it through the holidays take some time to check in with yourself. Are you feeling a little off kilter? Maybe you’re working through a new challenge you set for yourself this year. Or maybe you just overdid it the last couple of weeks. No matter what you’re recovering from or working through, there is something you need to do first: you need make sure you’re taking care of yourself.


Let’s think about all of the things you might’ve put your body through from late November through January 1

  • Over-eating

  • Stress

  • Travel

  • Family

  • Over-spending

  • Focusing on everyone except yourself...
